Do diet pills work for weight loss?

As an increasingly overweight and obese society, it isn't surprising that companies are capitalizing on people's pains and flooding the market with magic solution diet pills. Splayed across the internet, tv, flyers and stores are targeted marketing ads, promoting the next best way to lose fat and therefore, find happiness.

Typical miracle cure diet pills include Hydroxycut, Green coffee bean, Garcinia Cambodgia, L-Carnitine, Synephrine, random unheard-of ingredients and excessive amounts of caffeine. Not only are these products overpriced, under-researched, obnoxiously marketed and potentially dangerous to our health, but they are also quite ineffective.

If people were to read the fine print on the efficacy of tested products, such as Hydroxycut, they would read this:

In onestudy, subjects taking the primary ingredient (C. canephora robusta) in Hydroxycut Hardcore and that followed a low-calorie diet for 60 days lost an average of 10.95 lbs. In a separate 8-week study, subjects using the same key ingredient lost an average of 3.7 lbs. This group followed a calorie-reduced diet and performed moderate exercise.

What needs to be emphasized here is that the first group lost almost 11 pounds of weight in two months, on a low calorie diet (starvation potentially) and the second group lost 3.7 pounds of weight, while following a diet and exercising. These results DO NOT show that the pills did anything in fact, because, it is known and thoroughly scientifically proven, that people will lose weight when changing their diet and exercising more.

To be statistically valid and reliable, the study would need to test the pills on subjects, who do not change their diet or exercise regime. Furthermore, the referred to study does not provide a follow up post regimen, which is crucial to take into consideration, for the majority of people will actually gain MORE WEIGHT than they've lost, due to the yo-yo affect after a starvation period.

Although no scientific studies have been properly conducted on popular diet pills, they have promising claims such as being able to:

  • Block absorption of fat and carbohydrates
  • Increase metabolism
  • Change body composition by decreasing body fat
  • Suppress appetite

The truth is this - unless you alter your diet and get weekly exercise, there is no magic pill that will have the ability to burn the fat off, for you. This being said, there are sure fire ways to make sure your body is burning fuel properly and maintaining a healthy weight.

Ways to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way

-Eat reasonably portioned balanced meals throughout the day. Choose to emphasize whole foods, veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds.

-When eating out, start your meal with a salad or a broth-based soup. Eat slowly and take home leftovers instead of stuffing yourself full.

-Move your body! Dance, walk, or run. Find ways to stay active, especially if you have a desk or office job.

  • Eat vegetables at every meal. Shred vegetables into your pasta sauce, add them into entrees, or simply munch on veggies and hummus, while on the go.
  • Increase your intake of dietary fiber. Try a psyllium based drink, or add chia seeds to your meals.

-Reduce processed foods. Non-processed high-fiber foods are slower to digest and have a greater thermic effect on the body, meaning they increase your metabolism.

-Increase your body's natural ability to burn sugar and fat by consuming antioxidants.
